Autism Assessment for Adults

Understanding Yourself Through a Different Lens

Have you always felt like you're "different" but couldn't quite explain how? Do social situations drain you in ways they don't seem to drain others? Do you have intense interests, struggle with unexpected changes, or find yourself masking who you really are just to fit in?

You might be autistic. And that's not something to fear - it's something to understand.

Many adults, especially women and people from diverse backgrounds, go undiagnosed for decades. They've spent their lives feeling like they're failing at being "normal," when actually, they've been trying to fit a neurotypical mold that was never meant for them.

Diagnosis isn't about labels. It's about:

  • Finally understanding why you experience the world the way you do
  • Validation that you're not broken, just different
  • Access to support and accommodations
  • Permission to stop masking and be yourself
  • Connection with a community who gets it

Common Autism Traits in Adults

Autism presents differently in every person. Here are some common experiences autistic adults may relate to:

Social Communication

Difficulty reading social cues, understanding unspoken rules, small talk feels draining

Sensory Sensitivity

Overwhelmed by lights, sounds, textures, or smells that others don't notice

Intense Interests

Deep focus on specific topics, need to learn everything about them

Need for Routine

Distressed by unexpected changes, prefer predictable patterns

Masking

Exhausting effort to appear "normal," hiding your true self in social situations

Emotional Intensity

Strong emotional responses, difficulty regulating feelings

Literal Thinking

Taking things at face value, confusion with sarcasm or idioms

Stimming

Repetitive movements or behaviors that help with regulation (rocking, hand-flapping, etc.)

Important: Many autistic people, especially women and people of color, have learned to mask these traits. An assessment will explore both visible traits and the hidden effort it takes to appear neurotypical.

The Assessment Process

This is a conversation, not a test. We'll listen to your experiences without judgment. Many autistic adults have been dismissed or misunderstood by healthcare providers. That won't happen here.

Before Sessions

  • Complete autism screening questionnaires (AQ, RAADS-R etc)
  • Optional: Informant questionnaire (someone who knows you well provides their perspective with your consent)
  • We'll review all information and prepare for our session

Main Session - Deep Assessment

(120 minutes+)

Depending on your presentation, this may include:

  • Deep exploration of specific areas
  • Discussion of differential diagnoses
  • Multi-domain detailed Sensory profile assessment
  • Review of any previous assessments or reports

If you're highly masking (common in women, professionals, or people from minority backgrounds), we are trained to recognize the compensatory strategies underneath. Masking doesn't mean you're not autistic - it often means you've worked incredibly hard to appear neurotypical.

Common Questions About Autism Assessment

"I'm worried I'm self-diagnosing or making it up."

This is one of the most common concerns. If you're worried about this, it often means you're being thoughtful and want to ensure you're not claiming something that isn't true. The assessment process will provide clarity - either confirming autism or identifying what else might explain your experiences.

"I have friends/a job/a relationship. Can I still be autistic?"

Absolutely. Autism exists on a spectrum. Many autistic adults are successful professionally, have relationships, and appear "functional" on the surface - while privately struggling intensely. High-functioning autism (or what some call "high masking" autism) is still autism.

"I'm worried about the stigma of an autism diagnosis."

This is valid. However, many people find that understanding they're autistic is actually liberating. It explains lifelong struggles and provides a framework for self-acceptance. You don't have to tell anyone about your diagnosis - it's yours to share or keep private.

"Will medication help?"

There's no medication for autism itself. However, if you have co-occurring conditions like ADHD, anxiety, or depression, medication for those conditions can be helpful. We'll discuss this during your assessment.

The Mind Atlantics Difference

Our Commitment to You

  • ✅ Minimum 60 minutes recovery time between appointments
  • ✅ We're never rushed, tired, or running behind
  • ✅ Your assessment receives the time and attention it deserves

Why this matters: Autism assessments are complex. Details matter. Nuance matters. When a clinician is exhausted from seeing 6 people in one day, quality suffers.

We would rather see fewer people and do excellent work than maximize volume at the expense of quality. This is healthcare, not an assembly line.

Culturally Sensitive Assessments

We understand that autism can present differently across cultures, and that many people from minority backgrounds have learned to mask their symptoms to fit in.

We provide assessments that consider:

  • Cultural context of your upbringing
  • Different family expectations and pressures
  • Religious and cultural values around mental health
  • Experience of being misunderstood or dismissed
  • Code-switching and masking strategies
  • Immigration, language, and cultural adjustment experiences

Support Beyond Diagnosis

Your journey doesn't end when you receive your report. Many clients have questions, concerns, or need guidance on next steps. We can advise you on the path forward.

  • Email Follow-Up: Quick questions after your assessment? Email us. We respond within 48 hours.
  • Support Letters: We can provide letters for workplace accommodations, education, or benefits applications
  • Referrals: Connections to autism-informed therapists, support groups, and resources

Still Not Sure?

No obligation. No pressure. Just helpful information.
